Before buying a replacement radiator: five details to check
- Height and width in millimetres: measure the existing radiator itself, not just the wall space.
- Panel and convector type: note whether it is single or double panel and whether it has convector fins; radiators of the same height and width can give different heat outputs.
- Pipe centres and valve positions: photograph the pipes and both valve connections. A different radiator width or valve arrangement may require pipework changes.
- Heat output: ask a qualified installer to check the room heat-loss requirement and the manufacturer's output at the system's operating temperatures. Physical size alone is not enough.
- Wall and fittings: check bracket requirements, wall condition, bleed/blanking plugs and whether matching TRVs or lockshields are needed.
