How to Identify a Replacement Tap Cartridge

What to photograph and measure when a tap cartridge needs replacing.

Updated 31 October 2026 · BM Plumbing Supplies Ltd, Leicester

The short answer: If you can show the existing part, its connections, its measurements and the job it does, we have a much better starting point for finding a suitable replacement. Below is our practical guide for this particular enquiry.

Why the tap brand alone may not be enough

A tap model can have variations over time and cartridges that look alike can have different heights, splines or port positions. If you have the tap's make and model, include it. If you do not, detailed photographs and measurements can be more useful than a vague description such as 'standard cartridge'.

Record the features that matter

After the water is safely isolated and the cartridge removed where appropriate, photograph its full length and underside. Measure overall height and diameter, and count the splines on any spindle if accessible. Note seals, locating lugs and any printed numbers. Keep the old cartridge as a sample if you can.

Ceramic disc or another type?

Different tap designs use different mechanisms. Some single-lever mixer taps use a ceramic mixer cartridge; many traditional turn-style taps use separate headworks. Matching the overall operation, shape, fixing and sealing arrangement matters more than guessing from photographs alone.

Make the enquiry easy

Send BM a picture of the tap in place, pictures of the removed cartridge from several angles, measurements and any visible make or model. We can then discuss what to compare against possible replacements. Do not force a part that does not locate correctly or seal as intended.
