How to Identify an Unknown Plumbing Fitting

A practical way to identify a mystery fitting before ordering the wrong replacement.

Updated 31 October 2026 · BM Plumbing Supplies Ltd, Leicester

The short answer: If you can show the existing part, its connections, its measurements and the job it does, we have a much better starting point for finding a suitable replacement. Below is our practical guide for this particular enquiry.

Start with what the fitting connects to

A photo of a fitting by itself rarely tells the full story. Note whether it comes from a tap, basin waste, toilet, radiator, copper pipe or plastic pipe. Photograph the item in its original location before it is removed, where safe to do so. Show both connection ends, any threads and the overall shape.

Measure rather than guess

Place a ruler or tape measure next to the part, and take one picture of the full item and two close-ups. Measure the outside diameter of the pipe or thread where possible. If the part has a brand name, code or arrow marking, take a clear close-up. Do not assume two visually similar fittings are compatible.

Look for the connection type

Compression fittings typically have a nut and olive; push-fit fittings take a pipe into a release or locking mechanism; threaded connections screw into another component. The same item can have different thread sizes or materials. The connection type, seal and intended application all matter when matching a replacement.

Ask BM to help identify it

Send Baz & Kaz a few clear photographs, measurements, quantity and whether you need collection or delivery. Tell us what has failed and whether you have a sample. We can discuss likely options and check the information needed before quoting. If the part involves gas or live electrics, leave removal and assessment to a suitably qualified professional.
