15mm vs 22mm Copper Pipe Fittings: What to Buy

Learn the difference between common copper pipe sizes and what to check when choosing a fitting.

The short answer: If you can show the existing part, its connections, its measurements and the job it does, we have a much better starting point for finding a suitable replacement. Below is our practical guide for this particular enquiry.

What 15mm and 22mm normally mean

In UK domestic plumbing, 15mm and 22mm usually describe the nominal outside diameter of common metric copper pipes. You will encounter 15mm on many smaller hot and cold water branches and 22mm on some larger supply or heating runs. Never choose a fitting only because the pipe looks about right.

Check the actual pipe and fitting

Measure the outside diameter of the existing pipe with an appropriate measuring tool. Older installations and some specialist pipework may not match modern metric fittings without a suitable adaptor. Check whether the connection is compression, soldered, push-fit or threaded, and whether the intended fitting is approved for the system.

Think about the whole joint

A pipe size does not tell you whether you need an elbow, tee, straight coupler, reducer, isolation valve or cap. Consider access, the required jointing method and the system conditions. Where an olive, insert or sealing ring is required, use components specified for that fitting rather than mixing parts casually.

Send the size and a photo

When asking BM for a part, tell us the measured pipe diameter, the fitting shape, any markings and how many you need. A photograph of the installation and the removed fitting is particularly useful. We can help narrow the possibilities and check what is available before you travel to the counter.
