Leaking Radiator Valve? What to Check Before Buying Parts

What details help identify the right radiator valve part when you discover a leak.

Updated 31 October 2026 · BM Plumbing Supplies Ltd, Leicester

The short answer: If you can show the existing part, its connections, its measurements and the job it does, we have a much better starting point for finding a suitable replacement. Below is our practical guide for this particular enquiry.

Find where the water is coming from

A drip near a radiator does not automatically mean the valve body has failed. Water can appear around pipe connections, the valve spindle, the radiator tail or elsewhere and run to the lowest point. Note the exact location, whether the heating is on, and whether the drip is ongoing.

Act safely before shopping

If there is active leaking, protect the area and seek prompt qualified help where appropriate. Hot heating water can scald. Do not loosen pressurised connections or dismantle a heating system just to take a better photograph. A heating engineer can determine whether a washer, seal, tail or entire valve is appropriate.

Record the valve details

Photograph the radiator and both valves, showing whether the valve is straight or angled. Include the valve head, connection to the pipe and any visible brand name. If known, note the pipe size and heating system type. Keep any old sample parts to hand after they have been safely removed.

Speak to Baz & Kaz
